“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
– Dr Seuss
Do you read in your native language? Is it something you enjoy doing? Why would it be useful to start reading in English?
Reading in English helps our brain to become familiar with the language. It is the fastest, easiest and most efficient way, as it is more focused than listening for example. In other words, you become more comfortable with English in general.
How can we help you with your reading skills at Intrepid English?
You can join our weekly reading club on Thursdays at 10am BST!
What to expect from Reading Club
We read articles, short stories or chapters from books. Some can be more challenging than others but please do not let that put you off! Our group is very supportive of each other and we take our time to ensure comprehension of both vocabulary and key concepts.
In a typical session, each student takes turns to read a portion of the article or story out loud. During this time I may make small corrections to pronunciation as they go along. As one person reads, the other students have the ability to highlight any words or phrases that they need help with and once a student has finished their section of reading, we review and clarify the terms before moving on.
Once we’ve finished, we will discuss some of the ideas presented within the text.
Each week I try to create a very collaborative and engaging experience so students can have fun learning as they read together.

What have we covered so far this year?
So far this year we have read short stories from Roald Dahl and Bill Bryson as well as excerpts from the School of Life and Memoirs of a Geisha. We also looked at Balderdash & Waffles which is a brilliant book covering the history and evolution of the English language. We have also looked at articles from the BBC and the British Council.
Still to come…
We are going to read the first chapter of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Neverwhere’ which is an incredibly imaginative story about an alternative underground London!
We are also going to look at the play ‘An Inspector Calls’ by J. B Priestley and act out the parts.
The first week of every month we look at an article from the BBC or British Council covering current events.
What do our Members get as extra?
Intrepid English Reading Club is open to everyone, but Intrepid English Members get a little extra. Members can set up their profile in the Intrepid English app, making it easy to connect on the go while commuting to work and access the ‘Reading Club’ group and see the vocabulary covered in previous Reading Clubs to support your learning.
On the app it is also possible to book your lessons with your teacher, start a course in the Academy, or chat on our Community page.
